83:42 minutes, ca. 38 MB — Download mp3, Ogg
Another epic episode…
Some anecdotes and stuff at the start: Dan’s mate Will got into trouble for downloading last week’s show because of the title. We also talk about our latest server downtime & IRC debacle. Thanks for all your donations!
We also plug the chibbi.
Releases (08:55)
Distros:
Web Application:
Development Release:
News (17:55)
The EU (aka. Boba Fett of the Tech World) is now investigating the ISO’s OOXML decision; Microsoft says: “Boba Fett? Boba Fett??? Where???”
Red Hat and the EFF file amicus briefs to say software patents are evil — we’re looking forward to the Mel Gibson movie
Microsoft releases 14,000 pages of documentation on their proprietary protocols to make themselves look open (but probably just because they have Boba Fett hard on their heels)

In-Depth (35:17)
Fab talks a bit more about MythTV and his Gentoo experience — can you say “kernel panic”?
Gaming Corner (45:38)
We talk about the upcoming game of the decade: Spore by Will Wright. Fab also tells us why he doesn’t like multiplayer games that much…
Tip of the Week (52:00)
- irssi, a console IRC client
Listener Feedback (55:03)
- First we have an audio comment from Eric Aguiar about vector art, audio sampling rates and the Archos 605 WiFi
- Cam DeCoster tells us about Urban Terror
- Leon has a tip for Fab’s Gentoo problem
- Jason Minyard makes a case for Slackware (using Dropline Gnome) and asks about the iPhone and iTunes
- Ger Appledorn gives us the following instructions for converting your significant other to Linux:
Preparation:
If your Office software/Windows is pirated
Tell her the following:
- the BSA will come and steal her computer.
- her computer is a worm/virus disaster waiting to happen because of all the cracks and lack of updates. All her files will be deleted.
If it is not pirated, just scream ‘your pc sucks’ a few times every day.
Step #1: Secure her surfing
- Install Firefox, copy her bookmarks.
- Make sure the Java and Flash plugins are installed and work! (Argument: Firefox is easier and much safer than IE)
Step #2: Free her documents
- Install OpenOffice.org
- Make it the default office suite.
- Explain to your girlfriend that if she has to mail a document she can send it as .doc or .pdf and show her how it works!
Step #3: Liberate her email from OUTLOOK
OUTLOOK takes your email hostage, it is very difficult to move your existing mail out of Redmond’s clutches. Here’s an easy way:
- Get her mail onto an IMAP server, which most ISP carry.
- Create the new IMAP account in OUTLOOK
- Move all her existing mail to the new IMAP account (Argument: Your mail will be backed up and kept offsite. (Check first))
- Remove Office, and let her use Thunderbird instead. Your mail is migrated automatically after you’ve configured the IMAP service. Furthermore, it is much easier when you switch to Linux.
Step #4: Instant Messaging
- Install one of the platform independent chat programs, like amsn or pidgin. (http://www.amsn-project.net)
- Set up her account(s).
Step #5: The final nudge
- Install a real easy-to-use distro, like Ubuntu.
- Set up all of the above applications.
- Help her get the hang of it!
I accept no liability or responsibility for any crashed computers or relationships.
- Will Noakes tells us about a server version of Slax
- Ben Jarvis raves about Elisa, a media centre developed by Fluendo
- Jimzat pulls our leg and gives a more positive Wubi review
- Sonny See sends us a letter and sound clip of John Wayne and suggests we make him our patron outlaw
After mentioning the Octothorpe, we wrap it up. Talk about this episode in the forums. See you next week!

Title’s got you interested, eh? This week: Fab does Jürgen Prochnow, a story from arsetechnica, we learn what a Gerrymander is and much, much more…
We start with another shoutout to Emmett, lostnbronx’s son. Fab also tries his best Jürgen Prochnow impression.
Releases (07:28)
News (14:45)
- OOXML is now an official ISO standard — looks like the shit has hit the fan (story from arsetechnica)!
We also learn from Dan what a Gerrymander is.
Ubuntu stands alone, unhacked at CanSecWest’s Pwn to Own — Mac was “the easiest target”
Also: guy tries to sell the hacked Vista machine but eBay pulls it — apparently it’s against their ToS to sell goods “that might cause harm” (like Vista)
Firefly extension turns your Firefox into a file browser — pretty cool!
Adobe joins the Linux Foundation — PR stunt or are they finally seeing the light?
Extra Stuff (41:07)
Fab talks about killing his mythbox and trying out Mythbuntu once again. This time it booted and he likes it a lot.
Tip of the Week: SmugMug, a very cool photo-sharing service
Listener Feedback:
- JP Campbell sends us his thoughts about Wubi.
- Nathan Dotz rants about Walmart and tells us why he thinks they stopped selling the Linux-powered gPC in the stores. He also sends us links to the gBook and CloudBook at Walmart’s site.
- Rob Collins tells us about Spicebird and plugs his site on which he plugged our show — thanks for that!
Before we wrap it up, we talk a bit about the new theme here on the site — please tell us what you think about that and the rest of the episode in the forums.

Another metric buttload of emails…
We start the show with some banter about the fact that the TLLTS guys changed their frontpage to something Apple-themed on April Fools:
(05:12) NYbill likes Dan’s accents and asks about how we came do know each other and do the show (we actually already answered that in last week’s show).
(07:00) Larry Bushey doesn’t send us free whiskey, but he thanks us for plugging the Going Linux podcast.
(08:45) George Tripp sends us a hilarious email and claims to be one of our oldest listeners. He tells us about his setup, asks if it wouldn’t be better to buy a Windows machine if it costs the same as a Linux-preloaded one and recommends Fotox for panorama photo stitching.
(13:05) Antone Henderson aka. Hendo tells us why going Linux really is a green move and sends us another great Noel Watson song, which we play at the end of the show.
(15:30) Wilhelm Käll wants us to create our own IRC channel — low and behold, we did: #linuxoutlaws on irc.freenode.net.
(18:10) Jim Shaver informs us that Dell has finally started to sell Ubuntu machines in Canada too and they are also quite a bit cheaper than the Windows ones as well. Cool, eh?
(20:33) Ger Apeldoorn doesn’t like these separate feedback shows — sorry! He also says Fab is totally wrong on server provisioning and points us to Linux MCE again.
(24:34) Martin Livesley from Southport in the UK tells us about Glyn Moody’s blog. Dan also plugs SpinVox.
(27:13) Paul Kaljuvee, another Aussie, tells us how he discovered our podcast and also about his Linux setup. He also asks the same question as NYBill.
(29:15) Philip Herron aka. RedBrain tells Fab about some cool Linux games and mentions some depression in the community he seems to be experiencing lately. He also says he’s sick of the FUD the Windows people are still spreading about Linux to which we totally agree.
(32:00) Shaun Mallette loves the show and says we rock. Thanks, dude!
(34:05) Mark Widdicombe asks us about how to get his ATI Rage card to work in Linux. Fab recommends to start with trying to disable the onboard GFX-card in the BIOS. He also recommends searching the Ubuntu Forums via Google by using site:ubuntuforums.org in the query. Dan also recommends Google’s Linux search.
(37:30) Steve tells us about a recent free software moment involving the Asus EeePC. He also watches Firefly, which is awesome!
(40:20) Jason Howell tells about the recently released 1.0 version of the “good” Solaris — Nexenta.
(41:15) Dick Turpin aka. Peter Cannon sends us another funny email. He recommends a forum topic update section for the show and says y’all need to get your arse on the IRC!
Fab also appologises for crashing the site.
(45:27) George Naylor relates his Linux story which is really neat.
(47:20) Drew plugs his site MyBrainRunsLinux.com with a tip for re-installing apps in Debian-based distros.
We also do a shoutout to lostnbronx’ 5-year-old son.
If you have any feedback yourself, drop us a line in the forums. The end of the show features the wonderful song Care For Me by Noel Watson.

Linux Outlaws 30 - Late Night Outlaws
Submitted by Fab on April 1, 2008 - 19:40.
70:05 minutes, ca. 32 MB — Download mp3, Ogg
On this show: Bruce Perens’s bid for the OSI board, Apple’s EULAs suck, a look at the Hardy beta, Wormux and more.
No April’s Fools joke, we indeed released a new show! We also now have an IRC channel: #linuxoutlaws on irc.freenode.net — drop in there and join us whenever you feel like it! Thanks to RedBrain for setting that up.
After mentioning the IRC channel, we talk about our plans for future listener feedback shows and corresponding poll at the forums. We do read one email from Russell Dickenson about Frugalware and their release names and answer his question (which actually many people asked) about how we came to recording a podcast, having never met each other in person.

Development Releases (Distros):
News Stories (18:40)
- We talk about Bruce Perens’s petition to get elected to the OSI board about which he talked on the latest Linux Link Tech Show episode

- Cuba and India vote no on OOXML at the ISO; Germany unfortunately voted yes
- ODF editor wants OOXML to get approved — Huh?

Package of the Week:
- Dan: Pencil, a very cool cross platform drawing tool
- Fab: wbar, a lightweight and fast launcher dock thingy written in C
Before we close it up, we give another shoutout to Chess Griffin, who just rocks! Please comment on this show in the forums.

Linux Outlaws 29 - It's a Bloody Nightmare
Submitted by Fab on March 26, 2008 - 21:24.
75:43 minutes, ca. 35 MB — Download mp3, Ogg
On the show this time: Lots of M$-bashing again, Dan’s Windows rant and much more.
Unfortunately, we start the show with bad news again. Sadly, Arthur C. Clarke, one of the greatest science fiction writers of all time, has died. Also, we correct a mistake from an earlier show since people told us that there is in fact a multimedia centre distro for Linux, which is called Linux MCE.

Development Release (Distro):
News Stories (23:44)
For fun, check out bug #1 for Ubuntu on Launchpad.
Wal-Mart stops selling the Everex gPC, but only in retail (you can still get it online)
The release date for Ubuntu Hardy Heron has been announced: 24th April 2008
The SFLC settles their suit with Verizon on behalf of BusyBox — another victory for the GPL!
Apache is still the #1 webserver or as Dan says: Apache is still The Daddy!
Project Peach releases their first trailer for “Big Buck Bunny”
US anti-trust commitee scrutinises Windows 7 — we also think the name “Windows 7” is shite
The Supreme Court also gives the go-ahead for Novell to go after M$ and Novell also wants to, even though they are buddies with Ballmer & Co. now
Dan’s Rant & Package of the Week (57:23)
We also have a rant by Dan on Windows as he’s rediscovered the pain of installing and using that particular operating system.
Package of the Week:
Fab: Firefly Media Server (aka. mt-daap), stream your music over your LAN
Dan: gBrainy, train your brain on Gnome
We then close the show with wishing everyone Happy Easter (sorry for the late release — it’s entirely Fab’s fault since he was insanely busy at work). Please comment on this show in the forums!

In this show: The usual Microsoft bashing, Canonical’s Landscape, Fab’s CeBIT coverage and much more.
At the top of the show, we thank James for his donation and Fab plugs the XPS m1330 review on Dan’s blog.
Releases (05:11)
Distros:
News Stories (08:53)
- Microsoft wants NGOs in India to send letters to the government to support OOXML — and they can’t spell!
- US delegation to the ISO votes to support OOXML — what a huge surprise…
- Microsoft admits big delay in fixing the Home Server bug and they are getting slammed even by their own fanboys on that
- Canonical unveils Landscape admin tool for servers
- Sun scoops up Python gurus — what are they planning?
- Quite a surprise: the BBC apparently uses Linux for TV production
- German police raids CeBIT because of mp3 patent violations and Fab narrowly escapes
Main Topic: CeBIT 2008 Coverage (41:06)
Fab talks about his experience at CeBIT, especially at the Novell booth and their whole “Interoperability” campaign with Microsoft (including Miguel de Icaza’s views on this). We also discuss the situation of open source software in the industry in general and some other interesting topics Fab came across like the dominance of Linux in virtualisation and the huge success of Asus’ EeePC at the show.
If you’re interested, you can also check out Fab’s gallery with photos from the show room floor:

We close the show with Dan’s song The Shed Anthem, which he recently released on his music blog, and mention that we will do a special listener feedback episode next (probably in between this show and the next usual one). If you want to give us feedback on the episode, please leave a comment in our forums.
